Theatre for Humans is currently in production with a play written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning playwright Marsha Norman. This groundbreaking piece will offer an in-depth look at the struggles women and girls around the world face and the dedication and determination shown by the United Nations and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) field workers whose efforts go widely unnoticed. The play will be a powerful creative vehicle designed to entertain and inform the public about important social issues that affect us all and will include a “call to action” encouraging everyone to do their part to create positive change in the world. For the first time, the United Nations Department of Public Information, through its Creative Community Outreach Initiative (CCOI), will team up with a theatrical producer. Through CCOI, the Theatre for Humans’ producers are working with United Nations field offices and specialized agencies around the world receiving expert advice on key issues affecting women and girls and meeting with humanitarians on the ground and the people they serve. Issues explored include human trafficking, violence against women, girls living in areas of conflict and women’s economic and political empowerment. The TFH play, set to open in the fall of 2014 coinciding with International Day of the Girl, will offer immediate engagement online and in the theatre providing opportunities for the audience to take action and help women and girls in the U.S. and around the world.
