One World Chorus

Aaron Nigel Smith

One World Chorus, based in Portland, Oregon, serves children ages 8-13 in diverse communities. Through the use of the performing arts, One World Chorus focuses on the support and facilitation of lifelong communities, educational opportunities, and authentic self expression.

In addition to providing arts education to the greater Portland area, Aaron and Diedre Smith conduct residencies and workshops throughout the United States. They are thrilled to be partnering with Cura Orphanage in Kenya for their first outreach project in Africa. All participants in One World Chorus will learn repertoire from a variety of musical genres including classical, international folk, and contemporary. Vocal training is augmented by drumming, music theory, composition, creative movement, choreography, yoga, and meditation. Curriculum is designed to be a fun, interactive, whole-child experience that emphasizes the joy of self-expression while instilling the value of discipline and diligence.

The residency will include a transcontinental recording project. Vocal performances of the children in Portland, Los Angeles, and New York will be interwoven with those of children in Cura to create collaborative recordings of “One World Chorus.” The professionally produced CDs will be distributed by Warner Brothers in partnership with Music for Little People. Proceeds will be donated to sustainable living initiatives in the village of Cura, Kenya.
