Songs of the Maasai Mara

Songs of the Maasai Mara

Micky Levy

200 million girls and women alive today have undergone a form of female genital mutilation (FGM). There are an estimated 3 million girls at risk of undergoing FGM every year. That's over 8,000 a day. Although banned in Kenya since 2011, the practice is widespread. In the Maasai tribe, girls undergo this operation as early as the age of 9. By 11, they're wives to men several times their age. FGM is a precursor to child marriage. Songs of the Maasai Mara is a buoyant love story that shows the realities of FGM: When Maggie, who runs a sanctuary in Kenya for girls escaping early marriage and FGM, meets Jack, a fast-talking, washed-out American sports agent, who's in Africa to recruit a runner, their worlds collide. While Jack is wrestling with demons, the dangers of a cultural tradition Maggie is battling quickly threaten to shatter their lives. Together, they fight for social justice, integrity, and of course, love.
